Domain extension

The big question that comes up is: Does it have be .com? From a search engine standpoint it depends. From a customer/client standpoint it matters. Many people do not remember the domain extension only the domain. This will cause a lot of your traffic to end up to the .com equivalent.

Hyphens

How do you choose between GreatWebsiteName.com and Great-Website-Name.com? The rule of thumb is: the less hyphens the better. That does not mean to exclude them all together. With the available list of domain names shrinking, hyphenated domain names become a viable option.
